Car Show to help fight a major killer of New Zealand men
Prostate cancer kills more New Zealand men than are killed each year on the nation’s roads. It has been going on for years and it continues with nearly 600 men dying of the disease every year. The real tragedy of this is doctors believe they would have been able to save about 300 of these men if only they had presented themselves for diagnosis and treatment early enough.
This is why the Queenstown Car Show is so important. It will raise money to help the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand educate men about the dangers of this disease which can be growing in a man even while he is feeling perfectly healthy.
Prostate cancer in its early stages does not usually present any symptoms. Symptoms generally only occur when it is more advanced and has reached a stage where it is less responsive to treatment. So men face this awful dilemma of possibly have a potentially terminal disease growing within them and not knowing about until it is too late!
The Prostate Cancer Foundation believes men should know what is happening within their bodies and recommends they should consider having an annual prostate check-up from the age of 50. However, if there is a history of prostate cancer in the family these checks should start from the age of 40.
Some signs to look for:
- a weak urinary stream
- difficulty starting urination
- frequent urination
- difficulty postponing urination
- waking frequently at night to urinate
- stopping and starting when urinating
- pain or burning on urination
Having these symptoms does not mean a man has prostate cancer, but they do mean he should have a chat to his doctor.
